The data that could tip the Fed’s hand. | MarketTalk: What’s up today? | Swissquote
Risk appetite got another hit yesterday after the US ADP report printed a weaker-than-expected number and revived the worries that the US official jobs data could also disappoint for the second month in a row.
Many investors believe that today’s job figures could be pivotal in determining whether the Fed will cut rates by 25 or 50 basis points at its meeting later this month. Why this data is so important? Above all, it is because the Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that a further weakness in the jobs market is undesired. That’s obviously a good reason for investors to put a lot of weight on the jobs data.

US equities remained under pressure yesterday after the JOLTS report revealed that the US job openings unexpectedly fell further in July to the lowest level since 2021. The US yields, the dollar and most major equity indices fell. On the other hand, the USDJPY dropped to the lowest levels since the beginning of August as the Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Ueda added more fuel to fire saying that ...

September began on an ugly note, to say the least. The bonds gained and US equities tumbled after the latest ISM data showed a fifth month of contraction in the US manufacturing, and at accelerated pace. The latter revived the recession worries ahead of this week’s critical US jobs data, and sent the S&P500 more than 2% down. This was the worst selloff since August 5, when a weak jobs data from...

Volkswagen announced unprecedented factory closures in Germany. But the E...

August ended on a positive note. Friday’s data showed that the US PCE and the core PCE index stagnated near the levels printed a month earlier instead of a small uptick. Most US and European indices ended August at, or near record high levels, as tech-heavy Nasdaq underperformed. This week, attention shifts to the all-important US jobs data this week - the last one before the Fed is due to star...

Thanks Ipek, waiting for Data Jobs, Nice weekend ¡¡
Thanks, to you too 😊
Thanks for your report. Personally, I'm buying the dips and my favorite stocks
Quite an ugly day though…
Thanks so much. Have a nice weekend.
I lost my nerve this morning and sold 80% of my portfolio. So I’ve locked in a very healthy capital gain. As my old Dad used to say, you can’t lose making a profit. When Mr Buffet starts buying again I’ll come back out of the bunker.
PS last week Berkshire Hathaway had a massive 299 Billion in cash, waiting for the inevitable market correction. As Warren says, you don’t run out of the Store during a fire sale 😄
Thank you very much for your thoughts. Appreciated very much
Cheers 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hi Ipek and thank you, 1. the oil price should have nudged the Fed last month to cut then?? 2. And wouldnt the Fed be aware of Sahm's Rule and therefore be ahed of the curve in cutting rates So why are they so slow to act? If they cut and there was a contra effect, they could cut again or would that be too undermining of confidence?
The problem is, they don’t want to cut before being sure that inflation is under control … because if they cut prematurely, they should hike again, and that would be bad for confidence. Therefore, the timing to start cutting is so crucial. And this is also why I think they’d rather start by 25bp - unless crisis. Because rectifying with another cut is simpler than rectifying with a hike.
Let’s hope gold sells and the dollar rebounds
No way ! I pray for the opposite to happen 😂
@@user-mz9il9ry9d China is sitting on a huge amount of US dollars. The US is slowly degenerating. China sees a big drop in the value of the US dollar over time because tax revenues won’t be enough to meet interest payments on the ever increasing national Debt. Long term the US is screwed because governments just keep printing money. China is using its USD to buy gold. Hence the gold price is so bulletproof.
Hello Swiss
Hi👋🏻👋🏻
Ipek, people who that believe there is no recession… are disconnected from reality or just do not live here in the states. The data doesn’t match what I see in the states just by going out and looking around.
No doubt. It’s the case everywhere I guess. I assure you that inflation in Switzerland is not 1% when you have 20-40% increase for your mandatory health insurance (one of the biggest charges of the year) but is not taken into account when calculating the cpi 😅 but we only have this in hand to work with unfortunately…
You're right, there isn't a whole lot of evidence of recession, it seems to be just based on fears. That sounds like a buyable dip to me. Those OPEC fools, of course they shouldn't over supply, are they just figuring this out? 😅 I thought they were smart, but I am disappointed.
Hahah yes, I was also wondering when on earth they were going to say something for God’s sake 😊😊
@@ipekozkardeskaya1383 Or maybe they were just trying to make a bottom in the oil market? Tell everyone we're bringing back tons of oil, load up on investments, then say we're cutting haha
@@samthedoorI’m not sure they win at this game ://
@@ipekozkardeskaya1383 Well they can do well if they keep cutting production but I guess then they have to go with lower revenues. If I were them I'd have my equipment ready to just turn on the taps so that I could keep up with slower developing projects that the US might start, especially if Trump wins.
@@samthedoorthat was the idea I think, not for a trump win but to let the global dynamics adjust… but…
We have the same conditions for another Aug sell-off. Lots of fear based flows into treasuries yesterday. Indices did nothing. Huge anticipation for the NFP print now.
Yep, indeed.
Good evening Ipek, when you mentioned "a flight to safety of the yen" and out of (risk) equities, did you mean globally?
Yes, I was referring to the global equity rout that accompanied the yen appreciation.
Thanks Ipek, as allways good analysis ¡¡
Cheers, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’m somewhat skeptical. I’m looking forward to heavily revised down numbers AFTER the coming elections. Call me old fashioned 😊
Lol, everyone has been traumatized by the recent BLS revision, I totally understand :)
Definitely seems like a lot can happen this week, yet. With a weak JOLTs number, I’m not sure what to expect for Friday. If it’s strong and good for yields, I agree it would be good for oil, too. The Fed hopefully will not only cut 25 bp but signal their plans for future meetings, perhaps a quarter cut every meeting, that would help!
I think so too. Todays weak jolts data wasn’t bad news per se - as lower job openings is not lost jobs. Let’s see what the data tells. I think good news will be good news for oil, along with OPEC now hesitating to start restoring production (surprise !)
@@ipekozkardeskaya1383 so that tells me that opec made a mistake and it wasn't a contrived strategy to confuse the market. Jeese, that's not good lol

Hi Ipek, maybe he will see job losses as transient like his brilliant inflation call. Can we really trust the figures with the culture of revisions seemingly baked in now.Its like sitting a very important exam and then going back 3 months later to change your answers ! Cheers
He is trying to avoid exactly that 😊 Umm, yes the revisions are not great, but it’s a compromise between precision of the figures and the regular releases. Often, the gap is small enough to rely on the data, sometimes it is not. I think that they are still a good proxy of the state of the economy. Image, if we had to wait two-three months to get a number…
@@ipekozkardeskaya1383 Yeah I guess you cant have it all. Maybe when AI takes over !! Cheers
Hi Ipek, Would it not be imprudent to cut rates two or three times in the remainder of this year without time to monitor the result?
It definitely would - especially knowing that inflation hasn’t yet returned to 2% - on the other hand, there is the risk of over tightening the economy. For their defense, it’s not easy …
We ve got to be careful with the incoming data in Japan. Any price increase in the oil might escalate a sharp policy change in the cb of Japan. Touch the wood till the end of the 2024.
Tech looks really sideways to me, as well as the whole market. I have a hard time believing that the money will leave tech and go to small caps, though, to me if tech fails, then the whole market will fail. Oil is terrible today, OPEC committing to higher production, China weak etc. But they must expect much stronger demand or they wouldn't be trying to create low prices with such a threat of large supply. Trump also wants to produce more. I still think oil can bounce back but certainly it's not looking pretty today. Oh well, long weekend soon!
Well yes that’s the problem, if the money leaves the tech, I am also worried that it won’t stay in the small caps for long, but I think that the scenario makes sense until correction. Where is the long weekend ? I have nothing over here 😊
As always thanks Ipek and have a nice and ☀️ weekend with your family and friends. Greeting Luc

Good evening Ipek (australia time) A question about correlating interest rate movements and PE ratios, is it safe to do so and if so what can we expect the effect to be in the USA now that are on 20:1 and Europe that has already cut rates and are on 16:1 ?
Yes in theory lower rates could boost economic growth and increase earnings hence temper the upside pressure on PE ratios. But if the rate cuts are due to slowing economy we can see the opposite - so the macro environment is important for the interpretation of the correlation between rates and PE ratios
Thank you for your excellent wrapup and enjoy your weekend

I'm glad that Nvidia came back up a lot more and CrowdStrike came from deep in the hole and is now up quite well on the day so things have recovered over night. My concern with Nvidia is whether it is over-owned or not. There is no CoT reports for stocks, just futures so it doesn't really tell you the whole story. Short Interest hasn't changed for Nvidia in more than a year so that's not an indicator, either. Those sound like extremely competitive companies if they can output that! Another threat to Nvidia, mind you, Nvidia could probably take them over if it wanted to. Are these publicly traded companies?
Well this is what they say, I need to dive into that to see to what extent it will be a threat. Nvidia could swallow these companies - or others could !
